The top leaves of the poinsettia, known as bracts, are flaming red, pink, or white and are often mistaken as flowers. The actual flowers are the small yellow structures found in the center of each leaf bunch.

The photo below is a great closeup shot of the true flowers of a poinsettia plant. The poinsettia true flowers in this picture are just opening. Unopened true flowers is one important sign that the poinsettia blooms will last a long time. This is an important tip when buying poinsettias.

The technical term for this type of structure is Cyathium (plural is Cyathia.) In these flower clusters there are one female and several male flowers.

The fully opened poinsettia true flowers with yellow pollen dust on them is a sign the plant is fully mature and will soon lose its blooms and colored leaves (bracts).

Mình cũng thích hoa này lắm đó, thích ngắm chúng vào mùa GS, màu đỏ thẫm thật là đẹp :)
ReplyDeleteNăm ngoái, vào thời gian này, gần GSinh, mình đi khảo sát các khách sạn nhà hàng trên Đà Lạt, họ chưng hoa Trạng Nguyên đẹp ơi là đẹp. Một anh trong đoàn nói là hoa này giống hoa màu đỏ biểu trưng cho hoa Giáng Sinh ở các nước Âu Mỹ. Thế là mình để ý và thích hoa này từ đó nhưng vẫn ko biết hoa Trạng Nguyên của nước mình chính là hoa mà người Âu Mỹ thường dùng để chưng trong dịp GS. Sau này, cách đây mấy hôm, thấy ko khí GS mình mới lên Google search thì moi biết ra là 2 loại hoa mình tưởng khac nhau nay là 1 bạn ơi.... Mình thích ơi là thích luôn. Và tên tiếng Anh là Poinsettia, tiếng Việt là hoa trạng nguyên. Màu thật đẹppp! Ko ngờ bạn cũng thích loài hoa này giống mình. Cái entry đó mình nghĩ post lên ko ai đọc hết vì chỉ để tham khảo , ai dè co bạn vào xem.... Cảm ơn Blueweb nha!
